  • Has the economy turned a corner?

Several economic indicators this week - from sales reports to government surveys to Fed chief Ben Bernanke's own comments - suggest the answer may be yes.

The economic recovery is spreading to most parts of the U.S. Merchants are seeing better sales and factories are boosting production, but many companies are still wary of ramping up hiring, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday.

  • Retail sales rose for the third straight month in March as better weather and auto incentives brought out shoppers in force.

The rise was more than economists had expected. It's the latest sign that consumer spending is rising fast enough to support a modest economic recovery.

Sales rose 1.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday, up from February's revised 0.5 percent gain. Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a gain of 1.2 percent.

Now, with 3D television technology on its way, the warnings are coming from TV manufacturers.

  • It's official. The "spokesanimals" won't go away. Republic has chosen Frontier as its new brand.

The name of the company remains Republic, and it will continue to run feeder carriers operated under contract for other airlines.

  • Fewer passengers boarded planes last year, but those who did were generally treated better than in the past.

Planes were more likely to land on time and bags less likely to get lost in 2009, according to an annual analysis of airline quality by private researchers.

As a result, passengers reported fewer complaints even while cash-strapped airlines reduced flight schedules and charged for everything from bags and pillows to prime spots in boarding lines.

  • As Tiger Woods returns to the golf course Thursday, Nike marks his journey back with a controversial ad. Some call it moving, others manipulative.

The ad shows Tiger staring into the camera grim-faced as his late father's voice is the only thing you hear.

Woods called his father Earl his best friend and greatest role model. He died nearly four years ago, but his voice is now being used in the Nike ad that was released right before the Masters.

The ad runs for 30 seconds with a somber-looking Tiger saying nothing. His father, instead, is doing the talking.

  • There is a place in Fort Worth where volunteers help preserve the city's history. But there is one enlightening piece on display that has worked continuously for more than a century; far outshining its modern counterparts.

It's at the North Fort Worth Historic District Museum in Fort Worth's Stockyards. "We have lots of old things from the past," explained museum volunteer Diane Carter. "Washing machines, wood burning stoves, tools, [and] pots we used to cook in. Of course, saddles. And I love the light bulb."

    That's right – a light bulb.

  • Spirit Airlines will charge as much as $45 each way for a carry-on bag, adding a fee that bigger airlines have yet to try.

The charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free. Spirit said it will add measuring devices at the gates to determine which carry-ons are free and which ones will incur the charge.

Even though it's a minor player, bigger airlines are likely to watch to see whether customers are willing to pay for carry-ons.
